KOLO STATION
Kolo station. The photo was taken in 2004. Here the victims arrived. The building didn't change very much since the 1940ies.

ARRIVAL AT KOLO STATION
A train with old Prussian passenger cars arrived, probably from Germany or Austria. The Jews didn't know about their fate. Therefore they didn't complain when they were ordered to enter the narrow gauge railway cars which brought them to Powiercie and finally to Chelmno, "for work".

CHANGING TRAINS
Via wooden boards the people entered the small narrow gauge cars. SS and policemen kindly assisted, still not showing the true face of the SS.

READY FOR DEPARTURE
A steam engine, carrying the narrow gauge cars, left Kolo station, heading for Powiercie. SS and police, armed with rifles, stood around to prevent attempts to escape.

TO POWIERCIE
Crammed into the railway cars, the Jews were brought to Powiercie station, around 6 km away from Kolo. Especially in winter the people suffered from coldness and rain.

REMNANT OF THE RAILWAY TRACK
Still in 2004 te remnant of the former railway track is visible. The rails ran on top of an embankment, from Powiercie to Chelmno. Where the track crossed a small river, some posts of the wooden bridge still exist. This track was used during Chelmno's second phase, when the bridge has been repaired.

ARRIVAL AT POWIERCIE #1
The train stopped somewhere near the Powiercie station. The victims were ordered to disembark the wagons. Then they had to march 1.5 km through a forest to the mill in Zawadka village where they spent their last night.

ARRIVAL AT POWIERCIE #2
Sometimes the victims were obviously carried by lorries (partially with trailers) to Zawadka. Heavy luggage had to be left at the site, later being picked up by the Germans and brought to Chelmno.
